Sun Smart Saskatchewan Skin cancer is highly preventable and yet it is the most commonly diagnosed and rapidly increasing cancer in Saskatchewan and across the country. Every year, approximately 25 people die and more than 2,500 cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in Saskatchewan. One of the major risk factors for skin cancer is sunburns, particularly during childhood and adolescence. Research shows that Saskatchewan children are more likely than other Canadian children to have sunburns during the summer. Prevention and protection from the sun’s ultraviolet radiation can reduce the risk of sunburns and of developing skin cancer. Sun Smart Saskatchewan is a new group of diverse partners and individuals whose goal is to reduce the prevalence of skin cancer for people living in Saskatchewan. We aim to achieve our goal by working together and engaging other community partners to: 1) increase awareness about the danger of unprotected exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun and the use of artificial tanning devices; and 2) develop strategies to promote sun safety and skin cancer prevention with a focus on children and youth.
