Sun Country Health Region works with provincial goal on sooner, safer, smarter surgeries

Sun Country Health Region is pleased to continue to be part of the Saskatchewan Surgical Initiative that puts patients first by providing surgical care sooner, safer and smarter. The Saskatchewan health system’s ultimate goal is to offer patients safer surgery within three months by April 2014.

At the end of three years of the Saskatchewan Surgical Initiative on March 31, 2013, there were 64 per cent fewer patients throughout the province waiting more than six months for surgery. On a provincial basis, that’s a reduction from 9,875 patients waiting in April 2010 who were waiting more than six months to just 3,577 on March 31, 2013.

Sun Country Health Region’s work contributes to achieving this milestone. During the period October 1, 2012 to March 31, 2013,  99.6 per cent of patients receiving surgery within the Region were offered a surgical date within six months.

"Our Region worked diligently last year to ensure that patients are offered a surgical date within the target period of six months,” says Marga Cugnet, CEO, Sun Country Health Region.

“We have adopted best practices to ensure safer surgeries, reduced surgical infections and improved recoveries. We have improved patient flow within our acute care centres and between acute care centres in other regions. We are providing better information for patients waiting for surgeries both in and outside our Region, as well as helping patients with their family doctors making better decisions on how to access surgeons.

“We are coordinating with other regions on our approach to improving the patients’ surgical experience in Sun Country Health Region. We will continue in that vein during the 2013-14 operating year until we meet the goal on March 31 2014 of offering surgery to all patients within three months.”
