SCHR prepares for drug shortages

Earlier this week, the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health announced it is monitoring the province's drug supply after being advised by drug manufacturer Sandoz Canada of its plans to reduce production capacity at its facility in Boucherville, Qu├ębec.

Health care operations in all provinces and territories, including those in Sun Country Health Region, will be affected by this reduction. In the short term, the Region has adequate supplies to meet the needs of its residents, patients and clients.

Most of the drugs are injectable products, used in hospitals, institutions and the Cancer Agency. The list of drugs includes some anesthetics, antibiotics, pain management and anti-nausea medications.

Sun Country Health Region is taking inventory of our existing supplies, monitoring our daily usage, and developing a plan of action for the longer term.

The Region is in daily contact with the Ministry and is awaiting further information about alternative drug suppliers and the identification of clinical alternatives to these particular drugs.

The Region will take all appropriate action to provide the best care possible to the residents of Sun Country Health Region.
