SCHR awarded Accreditation with condition

Sun Country Health Region (SCHR) has been recognized by Accreditation Canada for its commitment to meeting national standards for safe, high quality health care.

The week-long survey of programs, services and staff took place in May. All programs and services were reviewed, with 16 health care facilities experiencing an onsite tour and review during the process.

The Region achieved a 93 per cent compliance success rate. SCHR received a high score of 1990. Significant improvements were noted since the last survey in 2008.

One of the Accreditation Canada surveyors told staff, during a debriefing, that SCHR is “an organization going places and doing the right thing.”

Accreditation Canada is a not-for-profit, independent organization that provides national and international health care organizations with an external peer review process to assess and improve the services they provide to their patients and clients based on standards of excellence.

Accreditation Canada’s standards make it possible for health service organizations to embed practical and effective quality improvement and patient safety initiatives into their daily operations.

System-wide areas assessed during accreditation include governance, leadership and management, infection prevention and control, and medication management, while population-specific and service excellence standards address specific sectors, services, conditions, and populations, such as acute care, long term care and home care.

The surveys take place every three years.

“I am very proud of the staff who worked so hard to meet national standards of care over the past three years and who participated in this accreditation survey,” says Marga Cugnet, Interim CEO.

The Region continues to face challenges in the area of medication management, but is actively working to address these issues. A follow-up reports outlining actions taken will be submitted to Accreditation Canada in October 2011 and April 2012.
