Influenza Assessment Site Suspended

Sun Country Health Region has officially suspended the operation of the Influenza Assessment Site at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Estevan.

All individuals with influenza-like symptoms are now being handled through the emergency room of St. Joseph’s Hospital and physician offices as they were handled prior to the Assessment Site being opened on October 27.

The Influenza Assessment Site was open for several hours most days since October 27 to streamline the care of people with influenza-like illness and relieve pressure on the hospital’s emergency room and local physician offices.

About 280 people were diverted from the emergency room to the centre over the period it was open. Most people had mild to moderate influenza-like symptoms.

“The assessment centre took a significant workload off the emergency room and out of the doctor’s offices over the past couple of weeks,” says Dr. Shauna Hudson, Medical Health Officer for Sun Country Health Region.

"The number of individuals presenting to St. Joseph’s Hospital has dropped significantly and the site is no longer required,” says Dr. Hudson.

“We’re beginning to feel normal again in Estevan,” says Janice Giroux, Vice President of Community Health for SCHR.

“People with mild symptoms should continue to isolate themselves at home,” she says. “They do not need to visit the emergency room or see a doctor unless their symptoms worsen or they have underlying medical risk factors for complications of influenza.”

The operating room at St. Joseph’s Hospital, along with services normally provided out of the hospital emergency room, will resume this week.
