The Eden Concept of long term care was adopted in Sun Country Health Region with the opening of the $22 million Tatagwa View Long Term Care Centre in June of 2005.
The Eden Concept of care is a person-centred philosophy designed to help reduce the plagues of loneliness, helplessness and boredom for elderly residents and people with chronic illness.
It incorporates the use of small pets, plants and homey, attractive surroundings as part of the plan to help residents feel and be as useful as they were all their lives, and to reduce their feelings of helplessness.
The Eden Alternative’s purpose is to show others how companion animals, the opportunity to care for other living things and the variety and spontaneity that mark an enlivened environment can succeed where pills and therapies fail.
The concept is in use in Tatagwa View and has since been implemented in the Redvers Health Centre in Redvers. Other long term care facilities in Sun Country Health Region are considering adopting it as well.
