Students receive bursaries

The board of Sun Country Regional Health Authority learned at its monthly meeting on Oct. 22 that 42 bursaries have been awarded this year to students entering health care fields.

Students can receive up to $20,000 in bursaries over four years, in hard to recruit professions, in exchange for a two year return-for-service agreement with Sun Country Health Region.

"We are very pleased to see so much interest from students in health care," says Cal Tant, CEO of Sun Country Health Region. "We're optimistic this interest will translate into new recruits for our facilities and programs in the near future."

Mr. Tant also told the board that a new physician is scheduled to begin his practice in Arcola/Carlyle in early 2009 and two new doctors are expected to arrive in Estevan later this year. Aggressive recruitment for additional physicians continues for the Coronach/Bengough area, Carnduff and area, and Weyburn.

A new dietitian has been added to the staff to serve the Maryfield, Redvers, Wawota, Kipling, Arcola, Carlyle and Lampman areas. Mr. Tant informed the board the Moose Mountain Health Care Recruitment Committee had been helpful in finding accommodations for this person.

Recruitment advertising continues on university websites in Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, B.C., Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and North Dakota, as well as in the Canadian Nursing Journal, he says.

Mr. Tant also told the board the latest report from Saskatchewan Health Quality Council cited several programs in Sun Country Health Region for improvements in quality care to patients/residents/clients.

The Radville Collaborative and Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, the Live Well with Chronic Conditions Program, the Estevan Primary Health Care Team's Asthma Care, Drug Management in Long Term Care at Tatagwa View and the Discharge Planning Group at Weyburn General Hospital were all noted by the Health Quality Council.
