Spray program in Estevan for West Nile Virus

Saskatchewan Health and the Public Health Services of Sun Country Health Region have recommended the City of Estevan conduct a spray program to combat adult mosquito numbers in the city of Estevan.

A ground ultra-low volume (ULV) application of malathion will be used to reduce the risk of WNV transmission in Estevan on Monday, August 7, weather permitting.**

The spray program is the result of a dramatic increase in the number of mosquitoes in the surveillance traps in the City of Estevan this past week. In some of the traps, Culex tarsalis (which is the species primarily responsible for the transmission of WNV to humans) represents over 80 per cent of the mosquito species present.

These Culex tarsalis mosquitoes are also becoming increasingly infected with WNV. Our risk indicators show the risk of human infection is increasing.
