Stroke campaign

Sun Country Health Region (SCHR) is asking the public in June to help reduce the incidence of strokes in this Region. SCHR’s campaign will be held June 1-6, 2015, during Stroke Month in Canada.

Statistics Canada says stroke is the third leading cause of death in Canada. Six per cent of all deaths in Canada are due to stroke. Each year, over 14,000 Canadians die from stroke and more women than men die from stroke. Medical research shows there are estimated 50,000 strokes in Canada each year; that’s one stroke every 10 minutes.

High blood pressure is one of the causes of stroke that people can influence. Research shows that, in Canada, 20 per cent of men and 14 per cent of women are unaware they have high blood pressure. Only 66 per cent of people who are aware of their condition have it treated and under control. Women with high blood pressure have a 3.5-times greater risk of developing heart disease than women with normal blood pressure.

The SCHR campaign will ask the public to learn their blood pressure numbers and be aware of the impact high blood pressure can have on the incidence of stroke. High blood pressure is the number one risk factor for stroke.  Know your (blood pressure) numbers! advises Sun Country Health Region and work with your health providers to keep the numbers under control.

The campaign will feature elected an councillor or mayors from five communities in the Region to help spread the word.
