March 2, 2012 Community Advisory - MHO strongly advising Weyburn residents to boil water

The recent water test results from the City of Weyburn water treatment plant have confirmed that the water still contains living Cryptosporidium oocysts and that the water being produced is not safe to drink at this time.

Dr. Shauna Hudson, the Medical Health Officer for Sun Country Health Region is strongly advising that all Weyburn and area residents follow the precautions issued by the Ministry of Environment to boil water for one minute to reduce their risk of disease.

She says “the most recent water test results from the City of Weyburn water treatment plant indicate the continued presence of the parasites Cryptosporidium and Giardia and that water must be brought to a rolling boil for at least 1 minute before using for drinking, brushing teeth, washing dishes, washing fruits and vegetables, and making ice cubes.”

Dishwashers can be used for washing dishes if they reach temperatures of at least 45°C for 20 minutes; 50°C for 5 minutes or 72°C for 1 minute or 82°C for 12 seconds.

Grant Paulson, Public Health Inspections Supervisor, says “to date, public health surveillance has not identified any increased diarrheal illness in the Weyburn area.”

Dr. Hudson says the most common symptoms of Cryptosporidium and Giardia infection are mild to severe watery diarrhea and abdominal cramping.

If a person develops symptoms, they are encouraged to contact the Saskatchewan HealthLine. If they have severe symptoms or signs of dehydration they should see their family physician or primary care provider.
