Children may need a second immunization

Some groups of children in Sun Country Health Region require a second dose of H1N1 Influenza vaccine.

Dr. Shauna Hudson, Medical Health Officer for Sun Country Health Region, says the children who require a second dose of the H1N1 Influenza vaccine are:

  • Children aged six (6) months up to three (3) years;
  • Children between the ages of three (3) and nine (9) years who have chronic medical conditions.

“Healthy children ages three (3) to nine (9) years do not need a second dose of the H1N1 Influenza vaccine,” she says.

The minimum time limit between the first and second dose of H1N1 vaccine is 21 days. Children who require a second seasonal influenza vaccination require their second dose of seasonal influenza vaccine a minimum of 28 days after the first dose.

For children who require a second dose of both vaccines, Dr. Hudson is recommending that parents bring their children 28 days after the first dose, so they can receive both vaccines at the same time.

For those children who only require a second dose of H1N1 vaccine – it cannot be given before 21 days have passed. Anytime after 21 days have passed, a child can receive the second round of vaccine.

  • Most children under the age of 5 years in SCHR will be past the 21 days starting the week of November 30.
  • Most children aged 5 to 9 years of age will be past the 21 days at the end of the week of November 30.

Information on locations and times of the immunization clinics are available on the Sun Country Health Region website at www.suncountry.sk.ca and on two radio stations - AM 1190 and CJ 1280 at 7:15 and 1:45 a.m. each day.
