BURSARY PROGRAMS
Allied Health Provider Bursaries
This includes a number of health disciplines that are facing the greatest recruitment and retention difficulties. The specific disciplines eligible for bursary assistance changes on a yearly basis in order to adapt the retention and recruitment strategy to ongoing changes in markets and health systems.
You may be eligible for a Ministry of Health bursary for these allied health professions:
• Audiology (graduate degree)
• Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technology
• Cytology
• Dietetics/Nutrition
• Environment Health and Science (Public Health Inspection)
• Medical Laboratory Technologist
• Medical Radiation Technologist
• Occupational Therapy
• Pharmacy
• Physical Therapy
• Psychology (Graduate Degree)
• Social Work (Graduate Degree)
• Speech Language Pathology (Graduate Degree)
Re-entry program bursaries are also available for some professions.
Certain allied health professions will be eligible for clinical placement bursaries.
Amount of Bursary and Return-Service
Bursary amounts range from $2,000 -$7,000 per year for a maximum of two years return for service.
The length of the return-service requirement for most allied health professions is:*
• In Regina or Saskatoon: 2 years for each year of assistance.
• All other areas of the province: 1 year for each year of assistance.

Nursing Bursaries
This includes bursaries for students studying a variety of nursing disciplines, such as those studying to become Registered Nurses, Registered Psychiatric Nurses,Licensed Practical Nurses and Primary
Care Practitioners. Also, included in this category is Advanced Nursing for those pursuing training in critical care or perioperative nursing, as well as "Re-entry" bursaries for individuals who trained and worked as nurses in the past and wish to return to practice and re-certify in the profession. In addition bursaries are provided to nurses pursuing Masters and Doctorate degree for the purpose of becoming a nurse educator.
Those who may be eligible for Saskatchewan nursing bursary:
• Licensed Practical Nurse
• Registered Nurse
• Registered Psychiatric Nurse
• Nurse Educator
• Primary Care Nurse Practitioner
• Re-entry Nurse
• Advanced Nurse
o Perioperative
o Basic Critical Care
Amount of Bursary and Return-Service:
Bursary amounts range from $2,000 -$10,000 per year for a maximum of two years.
The length of most nursing professions is:*
• In Regina or Saskatoon: 2 years for each year of assistance
• All other areas of the province: 1 year for each year of assistance
* Some nursing bursaries have different return for service commitments.
Application deadline for most bursaries is early May.

Physician Bursaries
As part of the broad spectrum of retention and recruitment initiatives targeted at physicians, financial assistance is provided to physicians in various stages and types of education and practice. Information about physician bursaries is available from the Saskatchewan Medical Association, www.sma.sk.ca.

Undergraduate Medical Student Bursary - Provides bursaries to full-time students in years two, three and four of undergraduate studies at the University of Saskatchewan. Successful candidates receive bursary support in the amount of $15,000 per year to a maximum of 3 years of funding. Once they obtain licensure bursary recipients are required to provide full-time medical service in rural, northern or regional Saskatchewan.
The commitment required for one year of bursary funding is as follows:
• 8 months service in a rural community
• 16 months service in a regional centre
• 6 months service in the SMA rural relief program

Medical Resident Bursaries
Medical Residents are eligible who agree to provide service to a rural, regional or northern community in Saskatchewan.
Eligible residents are:
• Family medicine residents at the University of Regina
• Residents who obtained their undergraduate medical degree from the University of Saskatchewan and who are accepted into a Canadian university in Family Medicine.
Successful candidates receive bursary support in the amount of $25,000 per year to a maximum of two years. Once they obtain licensure bursary recipients are required to provide full time medical service in rural, northern or regional Saskatchewan.
The commitment required for one year of bursary funding is as follows:
• One year of service in a rural community
• Two years of service in a regional centre
• 6 months service in the SMA rural relief program
